ICYMI: Metroid Prime 4: Beyond Did, In Fact, Achieve One Million Total Sales In One Month
Metroid Prime 4: Beyond has indeed sold at least one million copies thus far, despite it not appearing in Nintendo’s Financial Results Briefing.
After Nintendo’s most recent investor report made no mention of the Retro Studios-developed game, fans voiced concern about the potentially underwhelming sales debut for the long-awaited sequel. Thankfully, these worries are now (somewhat) eased with the knowledge that Metroid Prime 4: Beyond has sold over one million copies in total between the Switch 1 and Switch 2 in the time period of the games release on December 4th to the end of the year, December 31st.
The recent discourse began after Nintendo released their Nine Months Financial Results Briefing. The briefing is, in broad terms, a summary of their earnings over the last nine months, along with an estimate for the next three months. The report includes sales figures, predictions, and general information about the company’s operations since April 1st, 2025. (the beginning of their “Fiscal Year 2026”)

One of the more high-profile charts in these briefings is their Million-Seller Nintendo First-Party Titles list, which did not include Prime 4 at all. The list is split between Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 sales, and Nintendo did not provide a combined chart for both platforms. This has led to plenty of online speculation about Beyond’s sales launch, with some doubting that it would have even made an aggregate list at all.
Thankfully, the debate has been quickly put to rest by Stephen Totilo, a seasoned games journalist and former Editor-in-Chief at Kotaku. Totilo reached out to a public relations representative at Nintendo, who soon confirmed that Beyond’s combined sales did indeed cross the one million mark:
Following some consternation yesterday about neither the Switch nor Switch 2 versions of Metroid Prime 4 (Dec. 4) making Nintendo's million-seller list for the period ending Dec 31, a Nintendo rep confirmed to me today that the combined sales of those 2 versions have in fact passed a million copies

This confirmation is both reassuring and also not particularly surprising when you consider Circana’s market report last month. As we previously covered, Beyond debuted quite well in the U.S., reaching several Top 10 Best Selling lists via physical sales alone. Even though it hasn’t (yet) sold one million copies on a single platform, one million copies total in just a month is still a strong start.
It’s also worth remembering that although it’s easy (and, to an extent, fun!) to speculate on game sales and earnings and such, much of these early discussions and debates are still speculation. It takes time for the final numbers to get sorted out and released; heck, Metroid Dread was only confirmed to be the series best-seller in May 2022, seven months after launch. Until then, it’s important to take each report in context, and recognize their meanings and limitations before jumping to conclusions.
For now, Beyond’s overall commercial success is an open question, but no one can deny that it’s already on a promising path. Hopefully we’ll see it properly included in the next earnings report!
The Financial Results Briefing also includes statistics about a variety of Nintendo’s games and operations, and the Briefing Q&A addresses how the company is preparing for the upcoming memory shortage. You can read more about it on Nintendo’s Investor Relations page.
