Metroid Ravenous Announced for Switch 2, Releases January 28th, 2027

Two months ago, gossip was swirling about a new 2D Metroid game from MercurySteam. It was exciting, if not a little bewildering, but Nintendo didn’t address the rumors… until today’s Nintendo Direct, where Metroid Ravenous was finally revealed, and will be released in just four months! You’ll have to permit our enthusiasm, because it simply looks amazing.

Before we dive into the details, here’s the full trailer for Ravenous for you to watch (or re-watch!):

The rest of this article will be discussing the trailer at length. If you wish to watch it for yourself, do so now before you read any further!

The trailer opens with a monologue from Samus, describing a sudden attack from “unknown assailants” that nearly killed her. She admits her chances of survival are narrow, but she’s determined to do so no matter what. The trailer then shows a mixture of gameplay and cutscenes; Samus unleashes a rapid-fire barrage from her Arm Cannon, evades a pursuing spaceship, and duels two cloaked figures with energy swords and buzzsaw hats. Notably, she also freely wields her Metroid powers, sapping the life essence of enemies and even transforming into the Metroid Suit. (complete with an energy blade of her own) One of Samus’s attackers state that she will become their “flesh and blood”, but her eyes glow purple as she reaffirms her intent to survive no matter what, stating that “it’s eat or be eaten.”

A mixture of new and returning gameplay elements were also shown. The mobile platforming, free aim, and counters from previous Mercury Steam games return. Aeion Abilities like Flash Shift are improved, allowing her to shift vertically up and down as well as sideways; Samus even runs on water before shifting through a wall! As for combat, missiles appear to send a blast through enemies, and we saw her launching some kind of new missile that stops midair before plummeting to the ground. The UI has also been given a refreshed look: energy is displayed in a rounded bar, with segmented Aeion and missile bars to the right.

However, the most eye-catching part of the trailer was the sheer style on display. After the opening monologue, the needle drops on an incredible heavy rock song with guitar riffs and electric effects that reminded me of a DOOM combat track. The trailer has so many vibrant colors that visually pop, but also ends with a black-and-white freeze frame as Samus drop kicks an opponent. And that hand-drawn, jagged, punk font on the game’s logo just looks fantastic.

Metroid Ravenous will release on January 28th, 2027, only four months from today! Pre-orders for the game are available now. A Special Edition and new Amiibos were also announced: for more details on those extra goodies, check out our continued coverage of today’s announcements!
