Game Informer Ranks Super Metroid As Still The #1 Metroid Game
Gaming publication and online media outlet Game Informer has released its latest, official ranking of the Metroid series. Even with the release of Metroid Dread last year, Super Metroid still tops their list as the #1 Metroid game of all time.
For many Metroid fans, Super Metroid is the pinnacle. The end-all, be-all of Metroid games. The classic, the foundation, the progenitor of what makes Metroid what it is. It’s hard to argue against it – Super Metroid isn’t just considered one of, if not the greatest Metroid game of all time, but is regarded by most as one of the best video games of all time, full stop.
With Game Informer’s tenure, it is interesting to see their perspective on Nintendo’s storied sci-fi franchise, especially after the monumental release of Metroid Dread for the Nintendo Switch. Many fans have already brought Dread to the top of their list, but Game Informer is not among them. Dread has been placed at a lower, but still notable position of #3, below the aforementioned SNES release and the Gamecube FPS adventure, Metroid Prime.
Game Informer says that “nothing surpasses the total package that is Super Metroid,” while also singing the praises of Prime’s adaptation of the Metroid formula to 3D, and Dread’s engaging boss encounters, suite of abilities new and old, and the introduction of the E.M.M.I.s.
Metroid Fusion and Metroid: Zero Mission round out the top 5, while spin-offs like Metroid Prime Hunters and Federation Force drag behind in the lowest of spots on the list.
Although Dread doesn’t top Game Informer’s list, it still finds itself in a podium position on their ranking, as well as on many others’. It also finds itself as one of the best selling Metroid games of all time, and most recently became the best selling 2D Metroid title in the UK, among other regions.
