Metroid Surround Sound Remastered Soundtrack Available Today

As many of you folks know, this August marks the month of Metroid’s 40th anniversary. On August 6th, Omega Metroid released a massive feature on the 40 Greatest Metroid moments, but we’re not done yet. Today, we’re celebrating this momentous occasion with something extra special: the entire original Metroid soundtrack remastered in surround sound! You can listen to the entire score on the Omega Metroid YouTube channel or download it for yourselves in a variety of formats here.

This remaster (courtesy of our very own Doominal Crossing) enhances the music of both the NES and Famicom versions of Metroid, giving the score a depth and clarity never-before heard. The primary goal was to take the mono channel used in the Metroid soundtrack, and split it into two uniquely independant sound channels to create an immersive surround sound experience. The music was also treated with some subtle EQ, reverb and a cleanup of some of the harsher artifacts produced by the hardware.

Before the remastering process began, the entire score was recorded via NSFPlay, an open source program that allows the playback of NES and Famicom audio with lots of customization. For this project, the score was played back and recorded at 48kHz with each individual channel isolated. This allowed the channels to be treated with unique EQ, rather than blanketing the entire score with one pass.

Much like our previous remastered soundtrack from Metroid Prime, this release also includes some custom album artwork; including for the first time, custom CD art!

We hope you all enjoy the Metroid soundtrack, now in a brand-new, remastered form!

Keep it locked-on at OmegaMetroid.com for all updates on our future soundtrack remaster projects!
