Metroid Prime 4 Has Still Not Surpassed One Million Units Sold Individually on Switch 1 or Switch 2

Some bummer news for Metroid fans coming out of the latest Nintendo financial report: Metroid Prime 4 was nowhere to be found, meaning that the game has not crossed the one million units sold benchmark for either Switch 1 or Switch 2, although it should be noted that, collectively, the Switch 1 and 2 versions have surpassed the one million units sold mark.

The financial report, which covers Nintendo’s fiscal year (running April 1st 2025 to March 31st 2026), has a ton of interesting details, but doesn’t spell an encouraging picture for Metroid Prime 4, as the games sales look to have remained more or less stagnant since the last update in February 2026, which isn’t completely surprising, but still somewhat disappointing. Of course, when discussing sales of Metroid Prime 4, it’s impossible not to discuss both the games critical reception, which was received far less favourably than any previous mainline Metroid Prime title, as well as the troubled development of Beyond, which has become legendary at this point; and (perhaps unfairly) has created pressure for Metroid Prime 4 to outperform previous Metroid titles – or at very least, match the ~3 million units that Metroid Dread shipped.

While one million collective units is still a great achievement, it certainly feels like Metroid Prime 4 didn’t live up to its potential, and it could be fair to say sales have reflected that sentiment.

Other interesting tidbits from the financial reporting:

  • The Switch 2 has sold just under 20 million units since release, with Nintendo projecting to sell around 16 million more units in 2026.
  • Unsurprisingly, Mario Kart World leads software sales with 14.7 million sold; Donkey Kong Bananza is sitting around 4.5 million.
  • Switch 2 will be seeing a price increase globally this September.
  • Nintendo has actually added staff to their overhead year-over-year; refreshing to see in an industry with mass layoffs frequently.
