Metroid Prime 4: Beyond Reviews Are Here!
Major game outlets across the internet published their reviews of Metroid Prime 4: Beyond yesterday, and while the critical consensus may not be as universally positive as that of past entries, impressions point to yet another win for Retro Studios and the Prime series.
Those worried that, after such a lengthy development period, Metroid Prime 4 wouldn’t be able to match the quality of its predecessors should rest easy. Several reviewers out there agree that Samus’s latest mission stands right up there with Metroid’s best, with Game Informer asserting that Beyond “maintains the high standard set by previous games in the series” and Giant Bomb declaring it “the closest the series has ever felt to the original Metroid Prime, in terms of tone, gameplay, and quality.”

Thankfully, that beloved Metroid Prime spirit seems to be fully realized in Beyond. Even among the more mild reviews, praise went to the game’s focus on exploration, visuals (especially on Switch 2), and sense of atmosphere. However, these positives contrast with a handful of noted shortcomings, with Prime 4’s new psychic abilities, its combat, and the characterization of Sylux earning mixed assessments.
Many of the common criticisms brought up in these reviews relate to aspects of the game that fans were already concerned about. Sol Valley, the game’s hub area, for example garnered a mixed response, with Polygon calling it “limited,” IGN calling it “empty,” and GamesRadar calling it “dated conceptually” — there were a lot of comparison’s to Hyrule Field from The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time though.
The game’s NPC Federation Troopers drew an equally lukewarm response. After the internet got its first taste of Myles Mackenzie last month, we were all hoping Prime 4’s companion characters wouldn’t be as chatty as previews made them seem. Unfortunately, most reviewers bemoaned the excessive one-liners and unwanted hints of Samus’s Federation companions. Despite these interruptions, however, IGN confirms that Prime 4 still boasts a “relieving amount of exploration in total isolation.”
