Metroid Musing: Do the Preview Impressions of Myles Mackenzie in Metroid Prime 4 Concern You?
On Friday, November 7th, members of the press were flown out to New York by Nintendo to play an extended gameplay session of Metroid Prime 4: Beyond. Many of those who attended the event loved essentially every aspect of what they played… with one unavoidable blemish — that being one of the new Galactic Federation Troopers sent to Viewros alongside Samus, Engineer Myles Mackenzie. According to the previews, Myles has a lot to say, plenty of it seeming like “Marvel movie quip” style dialogue. He will likewise speak up in order to offer gameplay hints to the player and expand on the lore of an area, such as pointing out that the planet Viewros is not on any star charts and that something is off about it.
All that being said, depending on what corner of the internet you visit, Myles seems to have accrued a large amount of hate fairly quickly as many fans are concerned that his talkative nature will detract from Metroid’s typical tone and atmosphere. Luckily, from what has been shown, he isn’t present in the game the entire time. He isn’t the only Galactic Federation Trooper Samus will encounter, and most of the gameplay experience seems like it will be Samus exploring on her own like in previous Metroid games. On top of that, plenty of what Myles says is harmless, with some of his lines even getting a laugh or two out of some fans. If worse comes to worst, the voices can be turned off if the player chooses, but fans are still concerned that Myles’ type of dialogue will hamper the experience and set a certain precedent in the series going forward.
What do you think? Does Myles’ frequency and brand of chatter bother you? Is he starting to grow on you instead? Is the hate overblown? Let us know in the comments below!
