Metroid Dread reclaims #1 spot in Nintendo eShop after nearly 5 years

Metroid Dread is making a BIG comeback. After its release in October 2021, Dread managed to become the best-selling Metroid title of all time, with its most recent (December 31, 2022) updated sales numbers eclipsing the 3 million units sold mark: a first for any Metroid title. This was reason enough to celebrate on its own, but with the recent reveal announcement of a seemingly direct follow-up in Metroid Ravenous, it seems a lot of people have newfound interest in Samus’s most recent 2D adventure.

Metroid Dread has recently jumped to the #1 spot in the Nintendo eShop, which is remarkable for a game that is nearing its 5 year release anniversary. However long this lasts isn’t as important as the fact that it was able to climb that (albeit not huge) mountain once again. These recent sales have no doubt also been buoyed by the “Customer Appreciation Sale” that Nintendo has been doing for its customers in the United States as a way of “giving back” to customers after their successful legal response to the tariffs fiasco. Getting to score a fantastic Metroid game in Dread at only ~$40 USD is absolutely a steal and a must for any fan of the Metroidvania genre. Metroid has historically been a relatively lower-selling series for one with as much history and praise most of its games receive, so to see any Metroid game get a second wind of this magnitude with simply the announcement of another Metroid game is the cherry on top of an already sweet sundae.

Social media and non-Metroid fans alike have been buzzing over the reveal trailer of Metroid Ravenous, which we have and will continue to cover as the game nears its eventual January 28, 2027 release date. So despite the mixed reception of Metroid Prime 4 Beyond, it seems Metroid fans can sleep well and look forward to more Metroid content in the very near future.
