ESA Confirms No E3 for 2022

The news has spread far and wide across the gaming world. There will be no E3 in 2022.

Speculated to be a digital-only event, this year’s Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) has now been officially canceled by the Entertainment Software Association (ESA). This follows the cancelation earlier this year of a proper, in-person E3. Now, both a physical and virtual E3 are off the table for 2022. The industry was first alerted by a tweet from Razer PR lead Will Powers, and later, the ESA confirmed the details.

The ESA pulled the plug for 2020 amid the early months of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, but were able to host an event in 2021, albeit a digital one. When the ESA canceled a potential physical E3 for 2022, no statement was made as to whether or not the showcase expo would return in digital format later in the year. Naturally, this frustrated many affiliates normally involved in the annual event, who were in the dark entirely as to the ESA’s plans for 2022.

In an official statement made to IGN, the ESA shared that while E3 will not occur in 2022, it will return online and in-person in the summer of 2023.

The ESA has had a turbulent few years to say the least. Prior to the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, the ESA accidentally leaked the personal information of over 2,000 journalists with records available in the ESA website database.

Nintendo will likely reveal its summer broadcast plans sometime in the near future. Whether we get another digital Nintendo Treehouse event, a Nintendo Direct, or both, remains to be seen.
