Metroid Musing: After Being A More Traditionally Stoic Character, Did You Enjoy Samus Screaming At Raven Beak?
Samus has always been a (mostly) silent protagonist. Traveling the galaxy while letting her actions peak louder than words ever could. Her calm, collected, and stoic demeanor is as stalwart as the armor she wears, but that isn’t to say she’s an emotionless ice queen. Showing grief and anger over the deaths of the GF Troopers in Metroid Prime 2, sparing the Baby Metroid in Metroid 2, and sadness in being unable to prevent the deaths of the other three bounty hunters in Metroid Prime 3. These are just a few examples of Samus noticeably showing emotion solely through her body language, albeit much earlier in the timeline than Metroid Dread. However, during the climax of Samus’ showdown with Raven Beak, her Metroid DNA surged out of control, causing her to grab onto Raven Beak’s face to drain his energy, all the while screaming at the top of her lungs.
This display is one of the few emotional outbursts Samus has had in the games and plenty of fans were exited to see Samus’s rage boil over and Raven Beak getting some of what he deserved. However, some felt that Samus screaming was completely out of character and shouldn’t have been done. No matter what threats Samus has faced, no matter how badly the odds have been stacked against her, she’s always remained in control, even during her many battles with her nemesis Ridley. However, considering Raven Beak’s slaughter of the Thoha Chozo sparked the events of the Metroid games, destroyed what little of Samus’ Chozo family was left, and Samus’ newly acquired Metroid DNA, letting loose on Raven Beak in this moment has been seen as justified and cathartic for so many who played through Metroid Dread. What about you, dear reader? Were you one of those that found Samus’ rage fitting? Should she have remained as stalwart as she always is? Let us know in the comments below!
