A Full Metroid Prime VR Mod Is Now Available!
Almost a decade ago, a student research project called Prime VR caught our eye. The partial recreation of Metroid Prime in virtual reality looked amazing… but as a research project, it was never intended for distribution and only a lucky few got to play it. If you ever saw that and thought “wow, I’d love to play Prime in VR”, you’re finally in luck, as PrimedGun has now been released!
PrimedGun is a VR mod for the original Metroid Prime made by Nobbie246. After showing an early build in April, version 1.0.0 was released on June 20th. It’s built on Dolphin VR Redux, which itself is a mod enabling VR support for Dolphin, one of the most popular GameCube/Wii emulators available. It’s a bit confusing, but that’s one of the wonderful things about PC modding: there’s so much freedom to iterate, add your own ideas to things, and share those ideas with the world.
In any case, PrimedGun is one of the most impressive Prime VR mods we’ve seen. It looks fantastic and it’s well designed to boot, with smart gun/grapple targeting and “six degrees of freedom” for your arm cannon. Put simply, you can easily aim the Arm Cannon in any direction you like. You can even customize the position of the Arm Cannon itself: either extended from the end of your VR controller, or with your hand “inside” the Cannon just like Samus herself. Beyond the smooth Arm Cannon, PrimedGun also uses head tracking for the Scan Visor to work out where you’re looking, and motion-control beam select to quickly swap your weapon.
There’s plenty more calibration and customization options, too: one-click height calibration, input mapping and calibration, lock-on tuning, helmet HUD visibility, and different textures for the Arm Cannon. PrimedGun also has a left-handed mode to, well, swap the cannon to your left hand. All of these settings can be adjusted in the launcher and in the game headset.
While it’s not a completely smooth, bug-free experience yet, it’s only going to get better. Version 1.0.4 released this morning with input fixes and support for Dolphin cheats, and Nobbie is still working on more updates. They’ve also expressed interest in adding support for Prime 2, although the “huge list of bugs to overcome” is the main focus for now!
PrimedGun is available on Windows and Linux systems, and you can download the latest version from Nobbie’s GitHub here. Of course, you’ll need a VR setup to get the most out of it!
Are you going to try out PrimedGun, or have you already? Do you want to see similar mods for other Prime games? Let us know in the comments below or in our Discord!
