Metroid Musing: Would You Rather Know Ridley’s Origins, or Leave It a Mystery?
I remember as a kid, one of my favorite characters in any medium was Wolverine from the X-Men. Aside from being a super cool guy with a gruff demeanor, indestructible powers, cool metal claws, and a penchant for brawls, there was an air of mystery to him that made Logan so captivating. I remember when Marvel decided to tell his origin story, it felt like a shocking move, like something that could never be undone or never be taken back once it was out there. Many years later, I think the closest comparable in terms of a character with a mystique about them is the Metroid series’ own Space Dragon, Ridley.
Part of me yearns to know a little more about the leader of the Space Pirates; where he came from, are there more of his species, why did he end up so evil, etc. But another part of me worries that once we know, that mystique will be gone, and Ridley might appear more humanized. So my question to you is this: would you be interested in learning more about Ridley? His past, how he came to be a Pirate, and more? Or are you content with Ridley staying as a force of nature?
