Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown Will Be Playable For Free Until Sept 30th

One of the best Metroidvania games in recent memory was Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown, a vibrant 2.5D action-adventure game released in 2024. Today, Nintendo announced The Lost Crown as their next Game Trial, allowing you to play it as much as you want in the next seven days for free! If you’ve been even a little bit curious about it, now’s your time to give it a go.

The Lost Crown was the first mainline Prince of Persia game in 14 years, and was widely considered a return to form for the series. You play as Sargon, a member of the Persian warrior faction called The Immortals, and venture to the cursed city of Mount Qaf to rescue the kidnapped Prince. Sargon wields a pair of swords to cut through enemies and parry their attacks, staggering them or setting up for a brutally acrobatic finisher. Other offensive options include a bow and arrow for ranged combat and “Anthra Surges”, a selection of powerful moves with a brief cooldown between uses. The Lost Crown is generally more combat-focused than many Metroidvanias, with a wide variety of attacks, combos, and evasive maneuvers at your disposal.

Other highlights of The Lost Crown are its incredibly fluid movement and accessibility options. Sargon is a fairly nimble warrior from the start and keeps getting more versatile with air dashes, double jumps, and grapples. You’ll still encounter treasure chests and paths initially inaccessible to you, but you can take an in-game screenshot and quickly check it via the map, allowing you to assess whether you can reach it without having to venture back there needlessly. The game’s difficulty can be moderately customized, allowing you to make it as forgiving (or viciously punishing) as you wish, along with a toggle for in-game objective markers.

The Game Trial will start on September 24th (that’s tomorrow!) at 10am PDT, and conclude on September 30th at 11:59pm PDT. You’ll need an active NSO subscription to play it – if you don’t have one, you can conveniently get a free seven day trial for it. In our opinion, this is an excellent reason to use it! Additionally, The Lost Crown will be on sale for $8.99 (70% off) on the eShop, starting tomorrow and ending October 7th. Any save data during the trial will carry over to the full game, regardless of when you purchase it.
