Metroid Musing: Can Any Future 2D Metroid Remakes Get Away With Not Having the Slide?
If you were to ask me what my favorite Metroid game is, I’d probably answer on most days that it’s Super Metroid. It was my first Metroid game, and it’s still an amazingly put together video game, almost 30 years after its release. I replay it often, I love the physics, and I still get goosebumps at the parts you’re supposed to. To me, it’s almost the perfect video game.
But I do have to admit, in my last couple of playthroughs – post-Metroid Dread playthroughs specifically – I’ve found that the lack of sliding is really noticeable.
While I think it’s probably safe to say any new 2D Metroid title will feature the return of Samus’s slide, it got me wondering a bit about the inevitable Metroid Fusion remake, or that rumored Super Metroid remake, and if any 2D Metroid game could feasibly get away with NOT having that new slide ability.
Though it will radically alter some of the ways that you play Super or Fusion (or heck, maybe one day we’ll get another Zero Mission remake), I just can’t see ever going back to a pre-slide style of gameplay for the Metroid series, and I don’t think I would want it to either.
What do you think? If Super, Fusion, or any other game was remade, would the slide be an absolute must for you? Or would you be okay with the classic gameplay elements we know those games already have? Let us know in the comments below!
