Metroid Musing: Should Other M’s Accel Charge Return?

Other M is generally known in the franchise for its many faults. It tried a variety of new things, most of which didn’t land with audiences as Sakamoto-san might have hoped. There was, however, at least one piece of Other M that I felt worked rather well: the Accel Charge. This handy little upgrade decreased the amount of time it took for you to charge your beam.

With the latest installment, Metroid Dread, we were treated to some fantastic new abilities. The Slide let you keep your momentum, enhancing the pace of the game. You could hide amongst the shadows with the new Phantom Cloak. And of course we were dashing back and forth with the new Flash Shift. All of these abilities were a great addition, truly expanding Samus’ ability to traverse the world.

There are times, however, when subtle changes over time can create immense sense of growth–something we typically look for in a Metroid game. You generally start off with nothing, but by the end you’re given that sense of godlike proportions, and man is it satisfying. Here, I think the Accel Charge upgrade can help enhance that feeling of growth even more. Not only would giving players an initially slower charge shot make it more impactful when you’re able to pull it off in a tight spot, it would feel all the more rewarding and powerful as you make those charge shots faster and faster over time.

What do you think? Should we see the Accel Charge return? Let us know in the comments below.
