Paul has over 25 years of experience as an engineer and programmer. While at Retro Studios, he was an AI and Boss Designer that worked on Metroid Prime 2 & 3. Paul left Retro before work began on Donkey Kong Country Returns, as he looked to focus on a leadership role.
The discussion dives into Paul’s experiences at Retro and his views on leadership in the video game industry. This is tied to Project X, a title Retro Studios started work on after Metroid Prime 3 was completed. The interview then moves toward specific topics of what Paul worked on for Metroid Prime 2 & 3, such as the Helios boss, how Kensuke Tanabe initially didn’t like the design of the Space Pirate Homeworld, and that many of the staff at Retro were fans of Halo and how that affected Prime 3’s development.
